Archive and restore tasks

Archive is a quiet place for tasks you no longer want in your active list. Archiving removes a task from Today and Tasks without deleting it, so you can change your mind later.

Archive a task

Open the task, then select Archive task. Its title, due date, previous status, and notes remain with it. Its Plan date and scheduled start are cleared, so the task leaves active planning and no longer appears on Today.

Find archived tasks

Open Tasks, then select Archived at the bottom of the screen. Archived tasks are shown with the most recently archived first, along with the date each task was archived.

Restore a task

Find the task and select Restore. The task returns to Tasks with the status and due date it had before Archive. For an unfinished task, Restore does not mark it Complete. It also does not recreate a Plan date or scheduled start, or place the task on Today. Open the restored task from Tasks if you want to plan it for a particular day.

Free can hold 15 active tasks and 15 archived tasks; Plus can hold 1,000 of each. Restoring an unfinished task needs room in the active-task limit. If Archive is full, permanently delete an archived task or restore one when Tasks has room before archiving another.

Restoring an occurrence of a repeat

Archiving one occurrence never stops the repeating task. A fixed-calendar repeat continues on its later scheduled dates, and its archived occurrence can be restored like any other archived task.

For a completion-relative repeat, archiving the current occurrence advances the schedule. You can restore that occurrence only before a later occurrence exists and while the rule is still in the expected state; restoring then rewinds the repeat. Once that repeat has moved on, the occurrence stays in Archive. This keeps a restore from quietly reviving work the schedule has already replaced.

Permanently delete an archived task

Select Delete beside an archived task to remove it permanently. Unlike Restore, this cannot return the task to Tasks.

If there are no archived tasks, there is nothing you need to do. The archive is available only when you need to recover something.
